Do you have a cracked tooth? If so, you’re probably wondering how it developed. Unfortunately, there are many things that can cause a cracked tooth. Our dentist, Dr. Mark Folks, is happy to help you determine the underlying cause by listing some of the culprits of a cracked tooth, which are:

-Chewing something hard: This could be anything like a piece of hard candy, a bone, or an ice cube. Your teeth can also crack when you are using your teeth for something other than chewing, like as tools to open a package or tear a tag off an object. This applies pressure to the teeth and cracks the enamel.

-A hard hit: This could happen when you participate in high-contact sports and activities, like football, soccer, and basketball. When you suffer a blow to the face and you aren’t wearing a mouthguard, the pressure can damage and crack the enamel. This could also happen when you trip and fall or experience a crash on your bicycle.

-Bruxism: This is another name for teeth grinding. This is a habit that can cause major damage to your teeth. Usually, bruxism occurs when you sleep. You grind and clench your teeth, wearing down the enamel and harming the teeth.
