Keeping Your Teeth White After Your Treatment

Posted .

There are many tooth-whitening products available. The shelves of your local retail and drug stores are full of different gels, strips and treatments that tout their ability to brighten your smile. And of course, there are brands of toothpaste and mouthwashes that are designed to give you whiter teeth.

You should keep in mind that not everyone’s mouth is the same. A particular brand of whitener may not work well for you. It is a good idea to sit down and talk with your dentist about the best course of treatment for whitening your teeth. Keep in mind that the whitening treatment offered in your dentist’s office is effective for giving you a brighter smile, and will also be completely safe. Not only will you notice a difference after the first treatment, but your dentist can give you a whitening kit to take home to supplement the treatment you received in the office.

If you want to maintain that white smile, you should continue to brush twice a day and floss once a day; and see your dentist for your regular cleanings and exams. And, you should take other steps to ensure that your smile stays bright.

First, if you smoke or use tobacco, why not take this time to quit? Tobacco will stain your teeth, and nicotine will turn them yellow. You should also give some thought to your diet. Coffee, tea, and red wine can darken your smile. But, did you know that white wine can also change your tooth color? White wine has a higher acid content, which leads to discoloration.

Tomatoes have a high acid content, and are dark red in color. To avoid stains on your teeth, eat tomatoes as part of a salad, or before you enjoy that marinara sauce, have a leafy green salad. Greens leave a protective film on your teeth that helps to repel stains. If you enjoy balsamic vinegar, or curry, add some crunchy vegetables to your meals to help cleanse the stains from your teeth. Berries make a great snack and an even better dessert. It’s a good idea to have a glass of water or milk, or some cheese with them to help keep your teeth clean.

Crunchy fruits and vegetables not only scrub your teeth, but also have a high water content that helps to wash the acids from your mouth. Hard cheeses clean your teeth, and contain calcium to keep your smile strong.
